Sorry I've been away for a while! We've had a busy couple of weeks here!
I wanted to add this little bit here, and I'll add it to the "About" page soon, if not now, but anyway, instead of all this "husband" and "baby" stuff (since my husband doesn't want his or our baby's names out here), I've decided to use their nicknames instead. So, from now on, my husband will be referred to as "Hibby" and our baby as "Chupie."

Weird nicknames, right?! Well, I am known for them! Our cat was the second one (Hibby, being the first) to experience my naming issues... The poor cat started out as "Darwin" when we adopted him, and that is still the official name we put on paperwork at the vet's office or for our apartment's pet rent (yeah, seriously, $15 extra each month, and a $200 non-refundable deposit upon our move-in! What an expensive little creature!). But Hibby left for a trip to France right after we got "Darwin" (he was traveling a lot at the time, going to conferences for his PhD or, I think in this case, traveling to use special equipment that they either didn't have at his university or was too expensive to use there....I know, traveling to France versus a few bucks to use the lab equipment at the university?...What would you choose?!) And so, me and "Darwin" were left home alone.
"Darwin" quickly morphed into "Darweeno" while Hibby was away, and when he returned, that was the cat's "new" name. It's just cuter, isn't it?! And soon enough, "Darweeno" became just "Weeno." And "Weeno" became "Boweeno," then "Boweeno-bo," (which was often said quickly, like, "Ba-way-no-bo.") At this time, he began kneading us a lot while we slept. So, naturally, he became "Kneader-bo." And the variations don't stop there. Berkneaderbee. Bokneaderbo. Kneader-bo-weener. Suddenly, one day, "Burnerbee" came out. Then there was "Burnerbee VonWeenerschtein." Haha! Yeah, I know, it got a little weird. New nicknames come out every once in a while still, but mostly we've been sticking to Burnerbee. So that is what I'll refer to him as from now on....and you have the whole history of his ridiculous name changes!

Hibby said a long time ago, before we were even thinking of a baby, that we should pick the name before I even got pregnant so I could distort it as much as I wanted before the baby was born so that it wouldn't be confused as to what its name was. Well, we did pick our daughter's name about 6 months into the pregnancy, but it is a name that I feel is hard to come up with nicknames for. Now, as you can see, that is a little surprising! So I set out to come up with a good, nickname for her. The problem is, before you know someone, how can you give them a nickname? I needed to find out who my daughter was first.
Before babies hit 6 months (or at least for my baby!), they don't really do much. They can smile and they can laugh, but they can't sit up, they don't really eat food...they just kind of lay there, cry, take a bottle, and nap. So, it wasn't really until around 6 months that I came up with her nicknames. The first one was just adding our last name initial to her name, which is a "B," so sometimes I would write it as "bee" to be cute. It's not like she needed our initial since there weren't any kids in her daycare with the same name or anything. She just needed her name to be "cute-an-ised." So that was a start.
Then I heard about a book from some dumb morning show on TV. (I really don't like morning shows. They irritate the hell out of me, not sure why...although it might have to do with their inside jokes, and how they get excited over dumb games....sigh). Anyway, the book was called "Chupie: The Binky that Returned Home" and is written by a Latin pop star named Thalia. I had never heard of her, but Hibby is Colombian so I expected him to know something about her, but he didn't really. Anyway, the book is about a pacifier that goes back home after being with some baby for a long time. He misses his family and needs to leave. You get the story, right? A good book for a kid who needs to get rid of their "Binky." My sister was having trouble at the time with her daughter, trying to leave the Paci in Binkyland. So I bought a copy of the book for her, and one for our family.

Suddenly, that was the nickname for our daughter's pacifier--a chupie. In Spanish, a "chupon" is a pacifier. It literally translates to "sucker." Well, as soon as it was the name for the pacifier in our house, it also became a nickname for our daughter. My little Chupie. My little Sucker. That was who she was too--always breastfeeding... (I'm mostly glad that's over with....) And the nickname has stuck! We (meaning Hibby, myself, and all of our extended family! Abuela calls her "Chupita.") all use it for her! And we still use it for her pacifier too, but she only uses those for naps and bedtime so it isn't too confusing...I hope...
And I also hope that I stop calling her that before she hits high school....it won't be so cute then....especially since we live in Houston now, where probably most of the population understands Spanish and will know exactly what we are saying, and choose to translate it however they see fit....oh, the possibilities...!
I will have to give the background on my hubby's nickname another time...that is a long one... :)
